I assume this is for an on-screen show, not for print (PowerPoint is not a great choice for print) in which case, there is no reason to have both vertical and horizontal slides. I’ll try to explain…

Your horizontal slide fills your entire display or screen when projecting. Unless you are planning on flipping your monitor or the projector on its side when you get to a vertical slide, the image will always be the same size top to bottom. So a vertical slide doesn’t help. In fact, the top and bottom will probably get cut off.

Just insert the vertical image on the horizontal slide and make the background black so it becomes negative space.
